Should I leave some skills out of my CV? CV Writers advises against.
CV Writers say unequivocally: no.
All the important details about your skills and experience should go in a CV not the covering letter. CV Writers research shows that there is over a 40% chance that a covering letter will not get passed on from the first recipient. Therefore, if you’re applying direct to an organisation or via a recruitment consultant, there is a strong likelihood your covering letter will not even reach the recruiting manager. There is little point in keeping back your biggest selling point for the covering letter if it’s not going to get passed on. Your CV must be able to stand alone. That’s not to say a covering letter isn’t important. It’s just used in a different way.
Recruitment consultants and HR professionals are, if you like, the gatekeepers. Very often they will use the covering letter in deciding whether to put your CV forward to the recruiting manager. So, yes, your covering letter needs to impress and sell your wares, but it shouldn’t contain any specific information about your expertise that isn’t in your CV.
